So today I am going to rant on my least favorite punctuation mark. The exclamation point.
Now, yes, this ending to a sentence is always enjoyable for the two year old requesting pie or trying to be annoying to his 17 year old sister, but other than that, this punctuation mark crawls under your skin faster than the first chill of winter.
Currently I am reading a book that loves to use this device all too frequently. Using it at the end of long passages of though process, the author tries to infuse energy into the text. She tries and fails and I am left thinking her writing is immature.
The dialogue doesn't sound sincere. The thought process seems rushed and fake.
Does anyone else agree?
Ugh, I need better books to read. This is the third book in a row that I have not been satisfied with. First with Violet Eyes (don't read. Its really poorly written), Enchanted (Filled with Orson Scott Card's pervertedness), and now Ice ( I don't know how they managed to mess up my favorite fairytale, but they did).
Any brilliant/breath taking books you would recommend?
I'm currently reading We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson. Both my Mom and Jesse read her other stuff as well and they said she is an excellent writer, so I would recommend anything by her.
ReplyDeleteI READ YO' BLOG. LESS THAN THREE
ReplyDeleteIf you have not yet red The Book Thief (Markus Zusak), it's breathtaking. Very visually written--I want someone to make a graphic novel/awesome film of it. Also I'm currently reading Les Miserables, and it's *so good*. Vast--its just vast.
Also for fairy tales: you've probably already read Robin McKinley, but she has great retellings.
This is the third time this week someone has told me to read the Book Thief. I think I shall have to read it :3
ReplyDeleteI think you definitely shall :)
